An overview of some of the projects NevRwaste is currently working on.

Waste and recycling infrastructure.

  • Working with transfer stations to ensure they adhere to best practice guidelines.
  • Working to establish data collection systems in transfer stations.
  • Transfer station staff professional development program.
  • Coordination of risk assessments for closed landfill sites and preparation of plans for priority landfill sites.
  • Promotion of a regional Detox your home facility.
  • Investigating organic waste production and possible organic waste recycling systems for the region.

household separation and consumption

  • Recycling bin contamination project.
  • Project aimed at keeping rubbish out of the recycling bin. 
  • Organic waste behaviour change trial.
  • Development of a Regional Organics Strategy.
  • Waste Wise leadership program in initial stages of development
  • Coordination of a large scale plastic bag reduction program in the Alpine Resorts.

Schools, events and businesses

  • Assisting in the development and delivery of the Schools Environmental Education Directory (SEED North East).
  • Providing ongoing assistance to schools, businesses and events to help them to become Resource Smart.
  • Working with large regional venues to look at public place recycling options.
  • Working with teachers to integrate environmental education into school curriculums.
  • Supporting the CFA to introduce recycling infrastructure and litter programs at emergency staging areas.

Litter Prevention.

  • The 'Don't be a Tosser' program in 2008.
  • Working with Councils to improve litter enforcement in the region.
  • Providing the support for the state-wide 'Don't Waste the Murray' campaign and the Murray litter taskforce.

Communications

  • Continual website updates.
  • Development of a quarterly newsletter that can be emailed.
